On 8 August 1534 the pirate Khair ad-Din, sent by Sultan Suleiman to kidnap Giulia Gonzaga, landed on the beach in front of the Palace. The pirate stepped into the town through the port that overlooks Rome and is located behind the 15th century noble chapel San Rocco outside the walls, which is still consecrated and offers religious services on request.
